Quad Set Completed

London North Eastern Railway 1950 Brake Corridor Third E1866 (GOLD)

Further varnished trim has been produced, stained and varnished.

Brand new glass for the eight main passenger windows has arrived. These were required as the glass used on the previous restoration was not thick enough for safe use in a public rail vehicle. In just one day, all of these were successfully fitted into place which has certainly made a big difference to the external look of the whole vehicle.

Window drains have now also been installed to one side of the vehicle (four windows worth).

The final seats have been delivered into the upholstery workshop ready to be upholstered.

Varnish has been applied to the second pair of coaches, completing the set once again. A damaged compartment door lock also saw repairs to the surrounding woodwork which has allowed the compartment to be made available again. The set has now been moved into Bridge Road sheds for the winter.

Some limited sanding and filling work has been progressing on the seaward side passenger saloon to make the metal flat enough to fit the aluminum window frames. The metal has also received a first coat of primer to protect it from moisture in the air, as it will be a while before we can return to this area to prep for painting.

On the landward side, the bodyside adjacent to the guards compartment has been fully sanded and filled, and now awaits its first primer proper.

Several sliding doors for this area are also on the bench and have been sanded, filled and undercoated cream ready for eventual refitting. The doors for the guards desk have also had similar treatment.

A start has been made on reassembling the interior, but work has halted as the brand new window rubbers have been found to be leaking extremely badly in many areas, so a rethink is required before we can go any further.

The wagon has been moved out of the museum awning and is now awaiting its replacement hood cover which will protect the carriage spares which sit inside it.  During this time, the numbering has had a minor detail added to it and some insecure chains which hold the doors on have been secured.

Maintenance

We have started on a project to upgrade the gas capacity of kitchen car 81033. Two BR propane boxes have been removed from donor buffet car 9118 and have been cleaned down and are being painted up ready for fitting.

Meanwhile on the vehicle itself, a fire extinguisher has been removed and will be relocated to make room for the new propane boxes. A partial replumbing of the water system is also required and will hopefully be undertaken soon.
